24 suburban Cuyahoga County restaurants with the most food inspection violations in 2021-2022 (2023)

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Here are the suburban Cuyahoga County restaurants and retailers cited for the most food inspection violations during the 2021-2022 inspection year ending Feb. 28, according to state records.

The inspections were conducted by the Cuyahoga County health department, which is responsible for the entire county with the exception of Cleveland. Cleveland has its own health department.

More than 4,400 businesses received citations. But more than 75% of those received fewer than 10 citations.

A small number, including those listed below, had dozens of violations in 2018-19 - ranking among the top 24 countywide, with the top spot being cited with 114 violations.

This is the second in a 2022 series of stories highlighting food inspection violations on cleveland.com, after pausing the annual reporting during the pandemic, initially because so many restaurants had closed temporarily. To see the previous three inspection years at these links, 2017-18, 2016-17, and 2015-16.

Each restaurant in Ohio is inspected at least twice a year. Other places handling food to a lesser extent may be inspected once a year.

Violations identified as “critical” are those that “may immediately lead to a foodborne illness,” Ohio Department of Health officials say. Inspectors also note that the inspections represent only a snapshot in time for a restaurant.

Some violations are minor. Many problems are fixed at the time of the inspection. In some cases, follow-up inspections are conducted where problems need to be fixed.

Health inspectors cannot impose fines, but health departments can suspend or revoke operating licenses.
